Ramadan Umrah 2027: Transport Guide for Makkah & Madinah

Ramadan Umrah 2027: Transport Guide for Makkah & Madinah

Performing Umrah in Ramadan carries a great reward — the Prophet ﷺ said that Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj in reward (Bukhari and Muslim). It is also the busiest time of the year in Makkah and Madinah. Hotels fill up, roads around the Harams close, and transport becomes the part of the trip that goes wrong most often. This guide explains what to expect in Ramadan 2027 and how to plan your transfers so you spend your time in worship, not waiting for a car.

Expected dates: Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, with Eid al-Fitr around 9–10 March 2027. The last ten nights are expected from around 27 February. Exact dates depend on the sighting of the moon.

When to book your transport

First 20 days of Ramadan3–4 weeks before you flyBusy, but larger vehicles are still available
Last ten nights6–8 weeks before you flyPeak demand of the year; vans and coaches go first
Eid al-Fitr departuresAs soon as your flights are confirmedEveryone leaves at the same time; the airport and highways are at their busiest

When you book a private transfer in advance, your price is fixed at the time of booking, so last-minute demand does not change it. Ramadan rates can be higher than our standard fares — we always confirm the exact amount on WhatsApp before your trip.

What transport is like in Ramadan

  • Road closures: roads close to Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi are closed to cars for long periods, especially around Taraweeh and Tahajjud. Drop-off points move further from the Haram.
  • Traffic peaks at night: the busiest hours are from Maghrib until after Taraweeh, and again around Tahajjud and Suhoor in the last ten nights.
  • App surge pricing: ride-hailing prices rise sharply after prayers, and drivers often cancel. Read our Uber vs private taxi guide.
  • Train sell-outs: Haramain train tickets for the last ten days and Eid sell out early. Book as soon as the timetable opens, or plan a taxi as back-up.
  • Longer journey times: a 15-minute ride can take 45 minutes in the evening, and the airport run can take far longer than usual near Eid.

Plan your journeys around the prayers

The single best way to avoid Ramadan traffic is timing. As a rule:

  • Best times to travel: mid-morning (around 9 am to 12 noon) and early afternoon, when most people are resting after Suhoor and Fajr.
  • Avoid: the hour before Iftar, the period from Maghrib to the end of Taraweeh, and the night hours in the last ten days.
  • Intercity journeys: leave Makkah or Madinah after Fajr or mid-morning, so you arrive before Asr and settle in before Iftar.
  • Iftar on the road: if you must travel near Maghrib, carry dates and water. Our drivers stop so you can break your fast and pray.

Transfer-by-transfer advice

Jeddah Airport → Makkah

Most international flights land at King Abdulaziz International Airport. In Ramadan, plan to arrive early in the day if you can, enter Ihram before your flight crosses the Miqat, and pre-book your transfer so a driver is waiting in arrivals. Fixed fares start from SAR 230 at standard rates. See all vehicles.

Makkah ↔ Madinah

Many pilgrims spend the first part of Ramadan in Madinah and the last ten nights in Makkah. Schedule the transfer for the morning, and if you are going to Makkah for Umrah, ask the driver to stop at the Miqat (Dhul Hulayfah). Makkah to Madinah · Madinah to Makkah.

Ziyarat in Ramadan

Ziyarat tours are best straight after Fajr, before the heat and while roads are quiet — you are back at the hotel to rest before Dhuhr. Makkah Ziyarat · Madinah Ziyarat.

Masjid Aisha for another Umrah

Taneem is extremely busy in the evenings and the last ten nights. Go after Fajr or late morning, or consider Masjid al-Ji'ranah, which is usually quieter. See our Masjid Aisha guide.

Going home after Eid

The days after Eid are the hardest of the year for airport transfers. Leave much earlier than you normally would — for an evening flight from Jeddah, plan to leave Makkah by early afternoon — and book your transfer before you arrive in Saudi Arabia.

Travelling with elderly parents or children

  • Choose a larger vehicle than you think you need. Extra space for wheelchairs, prams and luggage makes a big difference on long journeys. A Hyundai Staria seats up to 7; a Toyota HiAce up to 12.
  • Ask about wheelchairs when booking so the right vehicle is sent.
  • Use hotel drop-off points away from closed roads, and agree a meeting point with the driver in advance.
  • Keep everyone together in one vehicle instead of splitting across several app cars.

Ramadan transport checklist

  1. Book airport and intercity transfers 4–8 weeks ahead (earlier for the last ten nights).
  2. Save your hotel name and address in Arabic on your phone.
  3. Buy a local SIM or eSIM so drivers can reach you on WhatsApp.
  4. Plan journeys for the morning; avoid Maghrib to Taraweeh.
  5. Carry dates and water on every journey near Iftar.
  6. Book your Eid departure transfer before you travel.
