Ziyarat Places in Makkah: Complete List & How to Visit

Beyond Masjid al-Haram, Makkah is surrounded by places that tell the story of Islam — from the cave where the first revelation came down to the plains where millions stand during Hajj. This guide covers the most important Ziyarat places in Makkah, what happened at each one, how far they are from the Haram, and how to see them in a single morning without missing a prayer.

Good to know: Ziyarat is not one of the rituals of Umrah. Visiting these places is about learning and reflection. Scholars advise against seeking blessings from rocks or soil, or performing special prayers at the sites — simply remember the events and make du'a.

Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira

Distance: about 5 km north-east of Masjid al-Haram · 15 minutes by car

Before prophethood, the Prophet ﷺ would spend nights in worship in a small cave near the top of Jabal al-Nour, the "Mountain of Light". It was here that the angel Jibreel (AS) brought the first words of the Quran: "Read in the name of your Lord who created" (Surah al-Alaq).

The climb to the cave is steep and takes most people 45 minutes to an hour each way. If you plan to climb, go straight after Fajr, wear good shoes and carry water. At the foot of the mountain, the Hira Cultural District includes a museum about the revelation of the Quran — a good alternative for those who cannot climb.

Jabal Thawr

Distance: about 8 km south · 20 minutes by car

When the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA) left Makkah for Madinah during the Hijrah, they hid for three nights in a cave near the summit of Jabal Thawr while the Quraysh searched for them. The Quran refers to this moment: "…when he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us'" (Surah at-Tawbah 9:40). Most tours view the mountain from the road; the climb is longer and harder than Jabal al-Nour.

Arafat, Jabal al-Rahmah and Masjid Nimrah

Distance: about 20 km south-east · 25–30 minutes by car

The plain of Arafat is where pilgrims stand on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah — the most important day of Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Hajj is Arafah." Near its centre is Jabal al-Rahmah, the Mount of Mercy, a small hill marked with a white pillar, close to where the Prophet ﷺ delivered his Farewell Sermon.

On the western edge of Arafat stands Masjid Nimrah, where the Hajj sermon is given each year. Outside the Hajj season the plain is quiet, and many pilgrims find it a moving place to make du'a.

Muzdalifah

Distance: about 12 km south-east, between Arafat and Mina

After sunset on the Day of Arafah, Hajj pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha together and spend the night under the open sky, collecting pebbles for the stoning ritual. The mosque here is Masjid al-Mash'ar al-Haram, mentioned in the Quran (2:198). Tours usually drive slowly through.

Mina and the Jamarat

Distance: about 7 km east · 15 minutes by car

Mina is the "tent city" — thousands of white, fire-resistant tents where Hajj pilgrims stay during the days of Hajj. It is also home to the Jamarat, the multi-level bridge where pilgrims stone the three pillars, following the example of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Nearby is Masjid al-Khayf, where many prophets are said to have prayed.

Jannat al-Mu'alla

Distance: about 1 km north of the Haram

The historic cemetery of Makkah. It is the resting place of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA), the first wife of the Prophet ﷺ and the first person to accept Islam, as well as his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib and other members of his family. Visitors usually view the cemetery from outside the gate and make du'a for those buried there.

Masjid al-Jinn, Masjid Aisha and Masjid al-Ji'ranah

  • Masjid al-Jinn (about 1 km from the Haram) — built where, according to tradition, a group of jinn listened to the Prophet ﷺ recite the Quran, an event described in Surah al-Jinn.
  • Masjid Aisha (Taneem) (about 7.5 km) — the nearest boundary of the Haram, where pilgrims already in Makkah enter Ihram for another Umrah. Read our Masjid Aisha guide.
  • Masjid al-Ji'ranah (about 25 km) — where the Prophet ﷺ entered Ihram for Umrah after the Battle of Hunayn. Also used as a Miqat by pilgrims in Makkah.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Makkah Ziyarat cost?

A private Ziyarat taxi costs from SAR 172 per vehicle for about 2.5 hours. Because the price is per vehicle, families and groups pay much less per person than on most paid bus tours.

Can I climb the Cave of Hira?

Yes, the path is open, but it is a steep climb of about an hour each way. Go early in the morning, avoid the midday heat and do not attempt it if you have heart, knee or breathing problems.

Is it allowed to visit Arafat outside Hajj?

Yes. Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina are open to visitors outside the Hajj days, and the roads are quiet for most of the year.

Can I do Ziyarat and a second Umrah on the same trip?

Yes. Ask your driver to finish the tour at Masjid Aisha, enter Ihram there, and then be dropped near Masjid al-Haram to perform Umrah.
